What Will You Learn?

One of the biggest questions in a chess game is “when to exchange?” Trading pieces can be fun, but how do you know when a trade is the right move? In “The Art of Exchange,” Grandmaster and three-time Austrian Chess Champion Markus Ragger tells you how to trade when it’s right for you, not for your opponent.

In Part I of this easy-to-follow video, Markus begins by discussing the value of the pieces. While piece values are not absolute, they can give you an immediate sense of whether or not you are getting the better of an exchange. For example, a rook is typically thought of as worth 5, while a bishop only about 3, so you know right away that under normal circumstances, you do not want to trade your rooks for bishops.

But what happens when the point values add up equally? This is the topic of Part 2 of this course, “Imbalanced Exchanges.” Markus illustrates how to play positions where you have, for example, 3 pawns vs. a minor piece, two pieces against a rook and pawn, a bishop vs. a knight, queen and pawn vs two rooks, or three pieces against a queen. These are all cases where both sides have units of equal point value, but those units have very different abilities and limitations. With this course, you’ll know when those types of trades are to your advantage and when you wish to steer clear of them.

Finally, in Part 3, Markus takes you through some more advanced concepts regarding exchanges. He shows you when exchanging can help you press your attack and when exchanging can help you defend by getting you out of a tough spot. He talks about how you can use exchanging to convert an advantage to a win and how trades can help you gain control of certain critical squares. He will also introduce you to concepts you may have never heard of in chess, such as a monopoly, which is where you attempt to make sure you have the only type of a certain piece. Markus explains why such an idea is important and how to achieve it.

Exchanging is a critical part of any chess game. It is very rare to get through an entire game without at least one exchange of pieces. With Grandmaster Markus Ragger’s “The Art of Exchange,” you’ll learn how to spot advantageous trades and how to decide to trade pieces with confidence. Order your copy today!
