What Will You Learn?

For many players, the middle game is the most challenging part of a chess match. We can memorize openings 10 or 20 moves deep, we can study the most common endgames until we know them like the backs of our hands, but in the middle game, we’re often on our own. How can you get better at the middle game, the heart of the chess game, so you can win more matches?

“Destroy Your Opponent: Middle Game Aggression” by Ivan Gil Biag is a great place to start. In this course, FIDE Master Ivan Gil Biag, co-founder of the New York Chess Academy, works with you to show you all the key middle game tactics, what they look like, why they are powerful, and how you can take advantage of them to win your games.

If you’re just starting out in chess, this is a great course for you, as Ivan reviews all of the most basic and important tactics you’ll need to win in the middle game. More importantly, Ivan starts out by reviewing general opening principles. If you understand basic opening principles, even if you forget the exact sequence of moves for your preferred opening, you should be able to get to a playable middle game where you can employ the tactics reviewed in this course.

Once you have reviewed basic ideas like rapid piece development and control of the center, the fun begins. Ivan shows you the tactics that you will need to win in chess and why they can be so powerful. In Part I, you will learn the strength of the three most basic tactics in chess, the double attack or fork, the pin, and the skewer. Once you have those down, Ivan also shows you more complex tactics like the discovered attack and removing the guard.

In Part 2, Ivan shifts into basic endgame ideas. Why are basic endgames important in a course about destroying your opponent in the middle game? Because if you know what basic endgame patterns you are looking for, you will know when to simplify your position into these patterns from the middle game. If you are aware that certain endgames are winning for you, you can trade or even sacrifice in the middle game to reach those endgame positions.

This is the idea behind Part 3 of this course, which reviews what happens later in the middle game, as you improve the position of your pieces in anticipation of that winning endgame. Ivan will also show you how and when to convert a material advantage, where you have one or more units than your opponent, to a win!

Finally, armed with all this knowledge, Ivan will show you the most exciting tactic in the middle game: the combination. This is a sequence of moves, usually initiated by a piece sacrifice, that leads to a winning position or a major win of material. Seeing Ivan’s combinations is not only fun, but can give you a lot of great ideas about how to play your own exciting, winning chess. This is a great course for beginners and more advanced players alike, so order yours today!
